So, I was playing BomberMan live on X-box live. Of course, it was chalked full of shit-talking, illiterate pre-teens and teenagers whose favorite words are: faggot, homo, gay, nigger, bitch, cunt, loser, bitch, fuck, shit, and basically any other awesome word you can think of within the lexicon of vocabulary that makes up the bright future of America. Of course, I play anyways, especially when I'm drunk (like now). However, I usually just turn their voices on mute, but this time I didn't for some odd reason (maybe b/c I was drunk).

Anyways, these two punk asses were dropping the most "f", "n" and "gay-faggot" bombs I've ever heard in my life. I figured they were just some punk-asses because their voices were about as deep as twelve year olds. Well, to make a long story short one of them had their web-cam on and was broadcasting to the world his awesomeness. It turns out that he was a teenage father playing "Bomberman" with his four year old kid. I swear to the Lord almighty that the father couldn't have been more than seventeen years old. And to top it off he was teaching his kid to talk as much awesome shit as he. Awe, like father like son. And the government wants me to pay for dip-shits like these health-insurance? Fuck, we're screwed.

Oh, and Massauchausets is not a good model for universal health insurance. It's one of the most affluent, highly educated states in the Union and it barely works. There's no way that it would work in say, Mississipi or California where half the population is a bunch of lazy, uneducated, fat-asses on welfare. But that's just my opinion, and my opinion doesn't really matter because I don't tell people what they want to hear. I tell them the truth. And the truth of the matter is I need another drink.

One more hard truth: it's a scientific fact that Americans are getting fatter, lazier, stupider, and more full-of-shit by the nanosecond. So, how does that translate to the economy rebounding on rocket-boosters? Or us maintaining the proverbial #1 label? I have no fucking clue, but then again I work at Safeway. But like the training video said: "We're simply the best!" I'm almost drunk enough to believe it right about now.

Muslims in America come from many countries and have diverse backgrounds, but they are united by their desire to practice their religion in peace and to replace the negative image many non-Muslim Americans have about Islam. In this report by Carol Pearson we meet three very different Americans who practice Islam.

Muzzammil Hassan came to America from Pakistan 25 years ago. He became a successful banker in Buffalo, New York, near the famed Niagara Falls.

While he and his wife were happy to be in the United States, they were upset by the negative perceptions of Muslims, and particularly how this perception might affect their children.

Like the perception that if Hassan's wife were to talk back to him he'd cut her fucking head off.

That is how they came up with the idea of Bridges TV. Mr. Hassan's wife challenged him to start it.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - While most children his age sketch on paper with crayons, nine-year old Lim Ding Wen from Singapore, has a very different canvas -- his iPhone.

Lim, who is in fourth grade, writes applications for Apple's popular iPhone. His latest, a painting program called Doodle Kids, has been downloaded over 4,000 times from Apple's iTunes store in two weeks, the New Paper reported on Thursday.

The program lets iPhone users draw with their fingers by touching the iPhone's touchscreen and then clear the screen by shaking the phone.

"I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw," Lim said. His sisters are aged 3 and 5.

Lim, who is fluent in six programing languages, started using the computer at the age of 2. He has since completed about 20 programing projects.

His father, Lim Thye Chean, a chief technology officer at a local technology firm, also writes iPhone applications.

"Every evening we check the statistics emailed to us (by iTunes) to see who has more downloads," the older Lim said.

The boy, who enjoys reading books on programing, is in the process of writing another iPhone application -- a science fiction game called "Invader Wars."

Great, another private school educated administrator without a single day of real-life public school teaching experience. Well, at least he knows how to say the right thing (is a career politician) and won't have his high minded-ideals bashed against the wall (there's a reason why over 50% of teacher quit within three years, and it's not the pay).

I love his idea of residency programs for teachers seeking advanced degrees in education. How long does he think teachers will stick around in urban schools after they've gotten their Masters/Phds? How many days did he stick around teaching after he got his advanced degree? Oh yeah, he hasn't taught a day in his life.

Oh, and bribing students to do well in school is a great idea. As if the value of an education isn't incentive enough. Shouldn't we be teaching students about thinking in the long-term, especially with America's fiscal/credit/savings crisis? Doesn't bribing them to do well in school just support the instant gratification, "now, now, now", "me, me, me" mentality of America?

Whatevar, at least it all sounds good and that's all that counts these days.

One more thing: I love the idea of accountability just so long as the students, parents, and communities are drawn into the equation of accountability. After-all, it takes a village to raise a child-not just a teacher. Therefore, all of the blame shouldn't be placed on the teacher for the failure of the student. However, blaming the teachers for everything is an extremely politically convenient "solution" to the nation's education problems.

Despite the far-left's: "We've got a huge mandate for change" mentality, Barack seems to know that he can't win a re-election solely with the support of the far-left. After-all, he only won 53 percent of the popular vote (aided by an atrocious Bush/Republican presidency). Yes, he won a land-slide in the electoral college, but the popular vote leaves a lot of people out there who aren't too fond of him. Not to mention, only 62 percent of eligible voters showed up to the polls, which leaves about 38 percent of eligible voters out there who just don't give a fuck (or see much potential for change) either way. That's not a huge mandate, especially when younger voters tend to get more conservative as they get older and gain more experience dealing with the realities of the real (not ideal) world. Unless, of course, they're super-rich and sheltered within the ivory tower-blind idealism is a luxury of the wealthy.

So, good job on your selections Obama and keep pissing off the far-left. Their view of the world is just as skewed as the far-right. Keep it sane and govern from the center.

Well, I've been slacking on the blog thing because of the new book I'm working on -- an accessible, exciting, action-packed one full of hope (because hope sells regardless if it's false or full of hot air) -- but I'd thought I'd spread some holiday cheer. Check it out:

Anyways, it's concerning a 20 something mail-order, Filipino bride and her 45 year old hillbilly, dream-boat of a man who she left the Philippines for. Basically, he proposed to her on a dangerous portion of the Oregon coast, she fell in, and all 4' 11'', 93 lbs. of her was swept away by the riptide. Now, I realize this is a horrible tragedy, but even I know that sleeper waves and their riptides are extremely strong this time of year. Why couldn't this local man wait until summer to propose, or at the very least not propose so close to the water? Damn, some people just don't think. And when people don't think, shit like this happens. Keep the dream alive, America. Don't think! There's always someone else to blame or solve your problems for you!

Oh, and I'd like to say my first "novel" was full of hope too. I just didn't pitch it right. I focused too much on the cynical/satirical/social commentary aspects of it. And frankly, that shit don't sell. Hope sells, the hard truth doesn't (at least at this point in history). Therefore, I'm going to resubmit it using a more upbeat, hopeful slant to it. It's going to go something like this:

Be the change you wish to see in the world. Change starts in the mind. For the world to truly change then people themselves, as individuals must change (humanity must change). Someone can’t do it (change) for us, no matter how optimistic they are. God said to Jesus in The Last Temptation of Christ: "It is arrogance to try to save the world-save yourself”. That is how you bring about true change. That is true hope. And that is what the Land of Lost Dreams is about: changing ones’ self serving dreams (mentality) into something greater. A true change must be conceived in the mind for it to be transformed into action. It will not be easy, for anyone. This is the story of one man’s arduous journey of change through the mind which leads to consequent action in the land where dreams are bought, packaged, and sold to the highest (and sometimes lowest) bidder.

So, that's how I'm going to frame the new pitch, while I work on my science-fiction novel that is accessible and exciting for all. However, it's a more of a hard science fiction/horror novel. The kind of speculative fiction novel that one would read and say: "Hey, that's not science fiction-that could really happen." Anyways, it's a money maker and that's all publishers really give a shit about anyway. No one wants to take any risks, even if the risk is worth while. Oh well, I'll quit my bitching and get back to writing it. But for those of you that care here's the angry rant I wrote to myself the other day concerning the responses I've been getting to The Land of Lost Dreams:

So, I kind of feel like Stephen Crane circa 1896 when he had a great book to publish, but couldn’t find a publisher because it didn’t fit into mainstream American literary theory. At the time American publishers were focused on Victorian style novels that had a moralistic message; not on books that were realistic. I feel we’re in a similar situation these days, except publishers are obsessed with pumping out books full of “hope”, whether or not the “hope” they sell is false, contrived or complete bullshit doesn’t seem to bother them. It’s what they think sells. And maybe it does, but I’m sorry “hope” in itself isn’t enough. You can “hope” all you want but that doesn’t necessarily change the reality of the matter. A change of one’s mentality that leads to a change in action is what is necessary for real change. “Hope” in itself is just a fairy tale-another easy solution for weak-minded Americans.

At any rate, I’m getting plenty of positive response from editors and agents, but most of them chalk their rejections up to “I like your idea, I like what you sent, but there’s not enough “hope”, “I like what you sent, but I don’t think this is the right time for your book” (What the fuck? This is the perfect time! I guess it doesn’t pay to be way ahead of the curve these days), or “keep writing and try to instill some more hope”. Sorry, I guess I was too realistic. I wish I could offer the people of America an easy solution, but I’m just offering a snap-shot of one man’s mind that’s caught up in a mentality driven by the contemporary American dream of excess, self-gratification, and self-entitlement. But the thing is: there is hope in the book. It’s just that the “hope” isn’t some crack-pot’s easy solution that says: “Read this book and all your problems will be solved” or “Read this book and you will be so filled with hope that all your problems will be solved”. This book is not “you do”. Change is an arduous process that begins in the mind (completely changing one’s mentality), and in-turn leads to action. Change is not merely “hoping”. Yeah, I “hoped” my heart out that my mother wouldn’t die of cancer, but that wasn’t enough. There isn’t any difference between my mother’s cancer and the cancerous mentality that the majority of Americans (and humans in general) hold. This mentality is what got us into this mess, and merely “hoping” isn’t going to change shit. That’s the reality. Sad but true. Sorry.

Anyways, I’m going to self-publish on Lulu and link the book to this blog. On second thought, I probably won't do this because I'm broke and I want to do a second round of submissions. But if I do, please buy it. I’ll provide some sample chapters on this blog so you can see what you’re getting yourself into. I’m also contemplating selling them at Powell’s books in Portland. Or maybe I’ll just give them away (on-line and in person like a bum on the street peddling for change, except I’ll be peddling my book)? At this point I just want people to read it because I feel like 10-20 years from now people will be saying: “Damn, at least one American didn’t have his head up his ass”. Besides, I’m working on a highly sellable novel at the moment that is accessible to all, thought provoking, and a true “page-turner”. It’s the kind of book that could be spin-off into a series (books as well as films, mini-series, or graphic novels). That’s all I’m going to say about them until I finish the first book.

So what happened to Stephen Crane’s book? After being universally rejected in America it was published in the U.K. It became a big hit in the U.K., and then became a big hit in the U.S. Go figure. I guess I should try to get in contact with some U.K. publishers/editors/agents. Until then I’ll try the self-publishing thing (maybe). I’m in the process of obtaining a digital copy of a painting that I think is perfect for the cover of “The Land of Lost Dreams” from my friend Michael Pacheco. He’s great. I hope it all works out, for everyone-including you.

Anyways, if McCain is elected and cuts all funding for essential services that will in-turn force millions of Americans to join the military simply out of economic necessity. He won’t have to reinstate the draft because the only jobs out there will be military related. Again, it sounds like he wants to turn a free-country into a military state. Of course, we could always start plundering other countries to boost our ailing economy. That’s what I call old-school experience, medieval even, not maverick. So please, take my moral dilemma into account when you cast your vote next week. Even though if McCain is elected it won't be a moral dilemma, it will be something I'm forced to do one way or the other. Let freedom reign!

Not to mention, what happened to the fundamental value shift that McCain has been touting concerning "Country First"? It sounds like McCain is sacrificing even more of his "values" just to get the votes of people who are just as much to blame for the American greed (Dream) game falling apart as the Wall Street guys, the federal government, and the banks. I'm sorry, but people need to take financial responsibility for their own investments, futures etc., rather than doing whatever it takes to keep up with the Hollywood Joneses. If the person taking out the loan can't figure out that he can't afford the loan (or can but doesn't care just so long as he can get the hot car/house to show of to his lost dream chasing friends) then it's just as much their fault as the person giving them the loan.

I remember a time when I used to work for MINI that I sold a guy a 20,000 dollar car for 50,000 dollars just so he could drive it off the lot that day. There's no way the guy could afford it being that he was backwards on his trade-in. Not to mention, the guy didn't make that much money. But he wanted it "soooo bad". Sad thing is he just had a kid and was talking to me about how he needed to start a college fund for his newborn. However, he just "had to have this car and was willing to do anything to get it". So I worked out a monthly payment plan that he could afford. Thing was that by the time it was paid off it would cost him 50 Gs. He was so happy to have gotten his hot car that he didn't even do the math to see how much the car would cost him by the time he paid the car off. Lucky me, I ended up getting a sweet commission for the deal. I'm not proud of what I did, but a lot of people were caught up in riding the "something for nothing" gravy train at the time.

People (everyone in this country) need to start taking responsibility for this gigantic All-American fuck-up of a country that we've all helped create with our backwards "Bigger is better, Hollywood mentality". After-all, this is a democracy. Therefore, we're all in it together and all responsible to some degree in terms of where this country is and where it's going.

Unfortunately, the majority of Americans (on both sides) lost their minds and any real "American values" a long time ago.

Not to mention, Obama is just looking like a smooth talking politician with a seductive voice to me right now. And McCain just looks like an angry, crazed old curmudgeon that will do anything to win.

Yeah, I'm not exactly optimistic, but I'm not exactly pessimistic either. I'm just realistic.

Well, sort of, but not really. The smog-shine is kind of gross and makes your skin feel all clammy and nasty, especially after you're in a place that doesn't have any air pollution. Not to mention, it's really bad for your lungs. However, I probably won't be saying that in the middle of winter. I'll be begging for some smog-shine.

One thing I definitely won't miss is the lack of water in California. After driving by the reservoirs near the NorCAL/Oregon border I really got a sense of how dire the California water crisis is. This is the only picture I was able to take because I was driving. It isn't the best, but you should get the idea. Well, enjoy drinking and bathing in your recycled shit, piss, cum, hormone, persciption medicated water Cali!

2. Credit lines to people/businesses who can't pay their bills are re-opened. Those people/businesses spend more money that they can't pay back.

3. Wall street types start figuring out that a bail-out doesn't equate to new jobs or more highly-skilled/educated American workers. Out-sourcing to different countries with better educated, harder working, and lower paid workers continues.

4. The bailout money runs out and Americans (private citizens, businesses, and the government) are in even more debt than before.

5. The bigwigs on Wall-Street that got bailed out figure out whats going on (the economy still sucks, their are no jobs, and people still can't pay their bills) and in response they save their own asses by selling off massive amounts of stock in order to secure their wealth. After-all, this is all Paulson and the like care about-getting the market back up so his friends can sell high instead of low and maintain their position in society.

6. On one dark day the market tanks in response to the massive sell-off of stocks by the whales on Wall Street. The next day the average American stock-holder responds to the massive sell-out of the whales on Wall-Street and the market tanks even further.

7. We the people (anyone not in the top 5% of the tax bracket) are completely fucked. But at least the big-wigs got out at the top of the market.

8. America continues its downward spiral down the toilet.

Then again, this is Washington and the general American public we’re dealing with; therefore short-term solutions and band-aids are the easiest way to do things.

First of all, it’s not even a bailout-it’s more of a twisted drug-intervention. Simply put, Americans are a bunch of vapid crackheads who are after a pipe dream that there’s no way they can realistically (maybe optimistically, pass it on!) achieve with their lazy minds, fat-bodies, and ignorant philosophies. That pipe-dream is the West-Coast/Hollywood dream of “me, me, me I want to live a life-style that neither I nor the world can afford”. The Wall-St/Financial/ Credit guys were just the drug dealers hooking them an easy fix on their dream. Everyone was having a gay old time getting high as fuck on themselves and their sweet new 22 inch rims they bought with the equity of their second house, which they could afford to buy by refinancing their first house.

The American dream became not about making enough money to buy a home and a car, but being able to make enough money to acquire enough credit so we could buy a Mercedes, a face-lift, two new homes, and a sweet ass boat. And then the country hit bottom. Time to get clean. No, wait…

The Feds are going to save us by resupplying the corrupt dealers so they can give out more loans and extend credits lines to a bunch of greedy, stupid crackheads who couldn’t pay their bills in the first place. What a great idea! I'm sure the dream addicts will all learn their lessons and use in moderation now that they've hit bottom. One of the reoccurring themes of the election has been "experience". McCain claims that Obama doesn't have the necessary experience to lead America out of the mess that eight-years of Republican leadership has gotten us into. I would claim that Obama's lack of experience is a good thing, especially compared to McCain's formidable life experience.

Time and action have proven that McCain has the experience of not having the cognitive fortitude to make sound decisions (6 plane crashes), remember the names of countries, or where exactly he owns homes. In addition, McCain is a renowned hothead (which he himself admits with pride in his memoir). I mean, do we really want a president that is able to hold is breath until he passes out when things don't go his way?

And when did getting tortured become a qualification for being president? I mean, we should show him some respect for his patriotism. But truth be told, if he wasn't such a reckless pilot he wouldn't have gotten himself into that mess in the first place. And he even had a chance to get out, but chose not to because he wanted to make his father proud. That sounds more like reckless pride with a touch of masochism than patriotism to me. Those are not qualities I want in a president.

One more thing-elitism. I find nothing more funny than a bunch of rich white-men calling a black-man who "pulled himself up by his bootstraps" an elitist. I mean, you don't get more elitist than the Bush or McCain family. I guess, they don't consider going to Yale or being a member of skull and bones despite being a pathetic student elitism. Cronyism is cool in the Republican party, but elitism is bad. People just don't seem to get it that everything has to change-our lifestyles, mentalities, economies, governments, etc. The sad truth is that humanity learns the hard way. Anyways, have you ever looked at where Georgia is located on the map? If you haven't noticed it's in the perfect location for staging operations in the Middle-East not only for us, but for Russia as well. They know if we lose Iraq we will immediately set up some serious shop there. They don't want that for once glaring reason-they're preemptively preparing for WWIII.

That's not to say Russia wants to start a war merely for starting a war. They're preparing because they're cold hard realists that lack "the audacity of hope". Unlike Americans the Russian government has basically come to the conclusion that the coming climate crisis as a result of global warming is unavoidable. As a result, they're preparing for the major countries of the world to go to war over resources. Securing Georgia is a good start for them because it will cut us off from the Middle-East, prevent us from building missle defense systems, and will give them a direct point of entry to the Middle-East.

Another sad truth is that quite a few American scientists think the coming climate crisis is also unavoidable. Not to mention, the DOD expects as much as well. That's why we're in Iraq and setting up missle defense systems along the Russian border. We claim to have cladestine motives, but that's just a bunch of hypocritical American bullshit. We've become so good at fooling the world to our false ideals/values that the majority of Americans whole-heartedly believe our own bullshit.

I sold my car the other day to a fifty something year old woman. After procuring her loan and passing the cashiers check ("free money") over to me she promptly told me:

"The American dream now isn't about owning your own home or car; it's about making enough money so you can purchase it on credit. You'll be very lucky, young man, to get through life without debt. We're a nation of consumers, but we don't really produce anything of much value. All we have is our purchasing power. It can't last that much longer if you think about it. I'm glad I won't be here much longer, relatively speaking."

I'm glad I've never had much of a greedy soul, at least in terms of acquiring excessive amounts of material possessions. Then again, I grew up in Nebraska, which is a microcosm all its own.

Unfortunately, the mentality that's eating us alive from the inside is spreading like a disease courtesy of Hollywood! I laughed my ass off to the point of almost puking when I saw that one of the families on Extreme Makeover Home Edition put up a 450,000 loan on a home that they otherwise couldn't afford in their wildest dreams without the help of the dream machine. Well, I'm sorry to say that's why they couldn't afford to buy a house in the first place-they're dumb, lazy, undereducated, overweight, self-entitled, greedy, All-American fat asses.

And who in their good conscience would allow that family to take the loan out in the first place? Never-mind, I didn't ask that question.

One thing that's exactly same about the real America and Hollywood is that they're both built on make-believe. Or maybe credit? At any rate people are going to have to pay their bills at some point, one way or the other, sooner or later.

GLOW in Santa Monica

So, these are some of the pictures I took from "Glow" in Santa Monica last Friday. It was rather disappointing to say the least. The exhibits were pretty lame for the most part, and there was way too many people there. The event wasn't well organized, there were no bathrooms (aside from the beach itself), and there was a motley crew of various L.A. freaks from brahs, skaters, bums, gangsters, yippies, hippies, goths, tweekers, teenagers, hip-sters, posers, moms, middle-aged hippies, whole Hispanic/Latino families camping out at the beach, and everything in between. In-fact, that was the most interesting thing about the event-all the different people there. However, from eaves-dropping on various passerbyers the general consensus was that people were very disappointed by the event, and felt very uncomfortable being around so many different types of people. They masked their discomfort by talking shit about the various groups they weren't a member of.

Despite the diversity of the L.A. area, most of that diversity keeps to itself. It's very rare that everyone mixes together like a true community. Most of the time people just talk shit about the different people in the city they don't understand. That's how diversity is celebrated in America. We love to tout it, but we really don't like living with one another (unless we're separated by out suburbs and we're watching it take place on the boob-tube). Putting everyone together for one night turned out to be an interesting social experiment. I'm surprised no one got seriously injured. Oh wait, they did.

All-in-all, it was a fun experience, but I wouldn't do it again. And I doubt the city of Santa Monica will either. It was completely unsafe to have that many people in that area at once. I'm surprised the pier or the small catwalk over the PCH didn't collapse.

Stacy is not "glowing" from the experience of "glow". The lack of restrooms were even more of a problem for the women.

Okay, so I sent out most of my submissions for the time being and I sold my car. So I can relax for the time being in a relative sort of way. Although, I'm sure I'll find something else to worry about soon enough. I'll post my proposals (w/ sample chapters) on here later in the week.

There is hope, it's just that the submission process is really, really aggravating. It doesn't help that I've got three novels fresh on my mind that I want to get started on. Oh well, I guess this is just part of paying my dues. Once I get this out of the way I'll have free reign to write whenever I want, and not have to deal w/ the life and business end of being an unknown who has to pay the bills w/out his writing.

There is hope for the world yet, thanks to me.

PDF Novel

I'll be posting a PDF link to my novel "The Land of Lost Dreams" very soon. I think it'll be easier and more convenient than posting separate chapters on the blog. I suppose I'll post it on my facebook and myspace pages too.

I'd have posted it now, but I want to submit it first. I'm finding the search for editors and agents to be extremely aggravating. I'd much rather be writing or doing something productive. It doesn't help that I finally realized it's a waste of time and money to submit to major editors and publishing houses. As a result of my ignorance I spent way too much time sifting through candidates. I've come to the conclusion that I should limit my submissions to small houses that accept unsolicited, unagented proposals and to literary agents themselves.

I'm not looking forward to going back to the library to look for agents instead of reading and writing. It's like being at a candy store w/out being able to eat the candy. And to top things off all I get to eat is liver. I'm starting to think I should have been an engineer or computer programmer or something.

I really wish my high school English teacher wouldn't have "inspired" me to write. I almost want to go back and say: "God damnit! Why did you have to inspire me? Why couldn't you have been like all my Berkeley professors and have made reading and writing the most boring, anal-retentive, politically correct, agenda driven bull-shit in the realm of human creation! Not to mention, a completely useless skill in the real world. Now I'm stuck slaving away in some godforsaken public school, in some godforesaken city while I look for editors/agents in my spare time. Why couldn't you have told me what the real world is really like?! Most people suck and are utterly hopeless! There's nothing I can do to change that, so I might as well get mine like everyone is doing before this shit-house of a civilization we've created goes up in flames!"

Oh well, I'll quit my ranting and get back to my search.

FYI: The book isn't that cynical. Its just brutally honest. There's some measure of hope for humanity. It's just that hope has a price like anything else. It's going to cost. There's hope for humanity itself, but that doesn't mean there's hope for every single person. Some of us a just fucked in one way or the other, for one reason or another. It usually has something to do with the nature of our dreams.

I wish I would have had my camera a few days before when there were at least 20 homeless dudes on bikes (most likely stolen) riding around the 405 interchange near Santa Monica in WLA. They looked totally badass all hooping and hollering, doing wheelies and downing moonshine while heckling drivers waiting to get on the freeway. Unfortunately, I believe the police confiscated their bikes and now they're relegated to just sitting on the curb in stolen lawn chairs while heckling drivers and panhandling for some spaaaare chaiiinnnnng (maybe so they can buy some wicked new bikes?).

fuck ticketmaster. This is the comment I left them concerning "my experience with ticketmaster and what I could do to improve that experience". The absence of a fat dick up my ass would be a good start.

The "convenience fee" charge per ticket is excessive. Eleven-dollars per ticket multiplied by six tickets equal $66. That's not very convenient for me. What exactly am I getting that's conveniently worth $66? Isn't it just as convenient for you -- the vendor -- to not have to pay people to sell tickets for your shows at a record store? Doesn't it save you money by selling tickets on-line? In-fact, it seems more convenient on your end because you can charge everyone an extra $11 a ticket for something that is saving you money and time in the first place. And I bet its pretty convenient for ticketmaster to collect well over $100,000 in convenience fees for a sold out show. So, please stop calling it a convenience fee, because it's more like a cock in the ass fee to help fill the bottomless pit that is your greedy, corporate soul.

It has been a long time...

I've been missing in action, and to tell the truth I kind of burnt myself out with this blogging thing. I'm not exactly sure if it's my thing. Oh well, I'll still post every now and then when feeling especially inspired and/or bored.

I'm finally over being sick after 16 days. I got sick after getting back from the Midwest, Flagstaff/Sedona, and Mexico.

I suppose I should post the rest of the pictures on Flicker or something. Maybe, I'll post a link to them along with the .pdf of my novel once I put it up. I'm currently sifting through editors to submit to at the moment. It's a long list. I'm trying to make it shorter. I should be ready to go by Friday.

Doesn't surprise me a bit. The same thing happened to me at Fairfax High School. I reported a teacher who was sleeping with her male students (varsity basketball players). I even saw intimate pictures of the teacher and her students on one of the student's cell-phones.

The principle responded to my complaint by telling me to "mind my own business" and that "it would be taken care of". It sure was taken care of. They never called me back to Fairfax again.

In other news, I had a revelation while driving across the wasteland of America. It was a eureka moment that resulted in a flood of imaginative insight. I came up with a whole novel, the plot, the characters-everything-for a new novel. I can't wait to get out of California and get started on it (them).

It seems absurd to me that she was even sentenced in the first place. Why not sentence the high-profile Johns that create the demand for the service in the first place? Oh yeah, because this is the land of the free, home of the hypocritical.

In other news, I love how Barbara is bragging about having an affair with a BBC. You're so fucking progressive Barbara! Wow! You're such a renaissance woman! God damn, just because it's in vogue to be fucking BBC doesn't mean it wasn't wrong. He was fucking married, you self-righteous bimbo, which made it wrong. Bottom-line.

Oh, and I finished the add-on chapters to my novel. Yay, I'm finally done, again! I'll be looking for professional editors/publishers at the end of May (when I get back from my mother's funeral). Oh, and the novel is much less whiny, more well-written, and better edited than this experimental blog. I'll also be adding more content that I've been meaning to add once I get this life shit behind me.

I was greeted today by a messy desk, which prevented me from finding the assignments the teacher said she left me. I was surprised to find a blackwater coffee mug in the corner of the room. But I shouldn't have been surprised because Los Angeles public schools are pretty much a war-zone. I guess the government is hiring the real thing to mess things up in the public schools these days.

The first three periods reminded me of why I wanted to teach. They were nothing less than amazing. Well, most of them at least, which is a rarity. I'm used to nightmares of epic proportions when comes to my experiences within L.A.'s public schools. It's refreshing when you get a good class full of good kids every once in a blue moon.

During second period the students in the Drama club put on a modern rendition of Hamlet, which was surprisingly good. The best part was when one of the actors tripped over the dead king while uttering the words "Thou shall...Oh shit!" before he fell flat on his face. He was lucky he didn't impale himself on his prop sword. However, he recovered nicely despite the raucous laughter from the audience.

In period three nothing of note happened, but I did break my record for the number of Jose(s) in the same class (8 out of 27). So much for diversity in the Los Angeles public school system.

By fourth period things started going downhill, fast. For awhile there I thought I would have a full day of good classes, which has never happened in my almost three years of substitute teaching in L.A. I should have known that it is impossible for a teacher (no matter how good, effective, or inspirational they are) to have a full schedule of good classes. Not to mention, she warned me in the note she left me.

The future of the city of the future began the class by engaging in ghetto flirting. This is a mating ritual that ghetto azz children use. It entails the exchanging of the most vulgar, disrespectful sexual expressions they can think up. Here's a few things I overheard them saying:

Boy: "Bitch, close yo' legz cuz it smell like a fish market up in here".

Girl: "Well, your cock and balls smell like 100 year old nasty gym shoes."

Boy: "Well, you a butt, azz face who like to take it in the mouth, which means you like to take it in da butt."

Girl: "That don't make no sense."

Boy: "Sure it does. It make perfect sense."

Girl: "Whatever, foo. I bet you got a small cock and are into freaky sex, s and m style like yo' momma is."

Boy: "Hellz yeah I'm into freaky sex! Who isn't!?"

Girl: "Tru Dat."

I could go on and on...

Yeah, I probably should have sent some of them to the office, but what's the point? The office was full as it was, and at least the kids were in their seats, not making a mess, and not being violent. They were even kind of doing their worksheets. In addition, the majority of the class were fucking around, which they probably learned it from wherever they were when they were not in school. When it was all said in done I couldn't do shit about it, so I thought I might as well get some shits and giggles about of it.

Fifth period was even worse as it resembled a kindergarten class aside from them being almost fully grown 8th graders (some were almost as big as me). Nobody could sit still, follow directions, or do anything productive aside from making a mess, insulting one another, trying to pick fights, and make overt passes at the few females in the class who were trying to do their work amidst the ruckus (for some reason it's rare for a really bad class to have any males that try to do anything aside from cause trouble). But all that stuff is really nothing to the everyday occurrences I experience. The most shocking thing that happened today was that I had to break up a fight between two very dark Latinos who were insulting each other by calling each other "black" in Spanish. I tried to reason with them about equality and all, but I was over-matched by the reality of their real worlds that were completely unreal, alien, and unbelievable to me. My world isn't that much different to them, as it is to most people. But they will see, someday. Like everyone else will one way or the other. Time is on my side, not theirs.

Well, the "students" may not be learning much from their formal education, but I sure as hell am. A tangible example is that I should keep up not smoking (41 days and counting). This educational periodical on not smoking that I found the students clowning on inspired me to keep up the good fight of saving my own ass from the perils of the modern world and the dysfunctional mentality it spreads like a disease begging to be cured.

This is my last reading response to the last education class I will hopefully ever take in my life.

I found Michie’s Holler if you hear me to be much better than Maran’s Class Dismissed. Right off the bat I liked Michie’s unassuming, first-person tone of voice over the assuming, third-person omniscient (know it all) tone of Maran. Michie’s motives seemed honest both in terms of how he related and dissected the material he was presenting to the reader, while Maran’s motives seemed premeditated and agenda driven. The little self-reflection offered in Maran’s Class Dismissed seemed like a hollow window dressing intended to deflect both Maran and her audience away from the apparent hypocrisies in the way she presented some of the material/ideas in her book. Michie was always being honest with himself (introspective with his motives), so it was easy to take what he had to say (his view of the world and its problems) to heart.

A veteran teacher of over twenty years once told me that in order to be successful at the profession of education: “You have to be good at fooling yourself”. I didn’t think much of it at the time, until I finished up Michie a few minutes ago. No matter how many bad things Michie saw he always put a positive spin on it. Instead of giving up hope by watching countless students renounce gangs, teen-pregnancy, etc. only to give into them time and time again he never gives up hope. He’s witnessing the cycle repeating itself over and over again – student after student, generation after generation – and it never seems to get to him. He’s not just a person that sees the good in people no matter how lost they’ve become; he’s the glass is half-full even when there’s only a drop of water in it kind of person. He’s like a modern day King Leonidas fighting an unwinnable battle in the hopes it will inspire the rest of the soldiers (students, teachers, and activists) to win the war. Unfortunately, I’ve found I lack such conviction. Not to mention, I’m not very good at fooling myself.

I feel there are glaring contradictions/hypocrisies within the American education system that as the kids would say: “everybody be frontin' about”. More than collectively fooling each other, we’re fooling ourselves when it comes to a lot of things in this country. I suppose it helps people cope with reality better. Americans love escapism. Anyways, how can everyone achieve equally if like Michie says on page 82: “Then there was Elizabeth. Some people, I suppose, develop into poets, but other just seem to be born with the gift”, or on page 141: “…I would’ve put his work up against that of many college-level videographers. The kid, as they say, had skills”? That’s not to say people shouldn’t have equal opportunity, but equal opportunity doesn’t necessarily mean equal results. So why do we expect everyone to achieve to the same level? Regardless if schools un-track classrooms some people are going to have “the gift” or “skilz” and some won’t. It should be the responsibility of public education to find those that don’t have “the gift” or “the skillz” a job that can provide them a living wage, while giving the kids that have the “gift” and “the skillz” every opportunity to fulfill their exceptional potential. Filling less than exceptional kids’ heads with dreams that they can “achieve anything” when they’re five or more grade levels behind the curve in reading, writing, and arithmetic is foolish. Moreover, it can be cruel because the kids (no matter how good hearted or optimistic they are) are going to find out the truth one day, one way or the other, and when they find out it will most likely break what's left of their dwindling spirits. Maybe, that’s what happened to William and Luis? Perhaps, one day they figured out that they couldn’t achieve their super-sized American dreams, and had no job skills to boot. Heartbroken and with no other life-options they exercised their only viable solution and joined a gang. They would have been better served by their education to have been provided with some viable job skills; rather than being used as pawns to assuage America’s egocentric, idealistic dream that everyone can succeed to the point of super-star, consumerism. There simply isn’t enough space for all these big dreams. Not to mention, the weight of the world can’t support the all-consuming nature of this mentality.

We (Americans and the people that live here regardless of the cultural/country/ethnic/religious/sexual orientation) live in (or at the very least within) a culture of vast contradictions that includes but is not limited to instant gratification, work ethic, personal responsibility, victimization, hero worship, victim worship, materialism, altruism, greed, generosity, individualism, community, elitism, equality, spirituality, hedonism, justice, injustice, order and rebellion. We all want our cake and want to eat it too. It’s the easy answer, which is what everyone is looking for in this country (just another American Dream). That’s what it seems like almost all the students want to do in terms of solving the educational crisis. As Juan relates on page 144 he wants his teachers to be “strict but free”. Ruby expresses the same sentiment on page 115 when she says: “Teachers must also know how to control the kids but not get out of hand like trying to abuse the students”. What about the students learning to control themselves? Everybody (teachers and the world at large included) is so caught up with trying to blame everything on everybody else that they fail “to be the change in the world we wish to see in others”. No one is willing to look in the mirror unless it’s to point a finger at somebody else. That doesn’t seem like much of a change to me. Or is the “change” that’s supposed to occur in every individual just limited to a particular group of people while everyone else can just stay the same? At any rate, something needs to change. I suggest we start with everyone.

I’ll start with myself by getting out of pursuing this profession for the time being. I have the utmost respect for educators and their courageous idealism. However, like I once read in a book and ended up learning from experience: “Courage is two parts fool, one part bravery”. I feel there was a time when America thought too much with its mind and not enough with its heart, and now it has overcompensated by thinking too much with its heart and not enough with its mind. America needs to find a balance again, and so do I. Thus, I wish Michie and all his band of like-minded, educational warriors good luck. I’m deserting the front and heading to greener pastures to prepare for the storm on the horizon.

I saw a bunch of the children of the future looking to make their marks on the world yesterday after school. I was turning left onto Texas off Westgate when I noticed four "students" vacating their car. They were flashing gang signs and yelling obscenities at a "student" walking alone on the side walk. They met each other half-way, blocking thru traffic with their petty gangster posturing and their parked car.

A middle-aged white man in a black Volkswagon Jetta that was right behind the "student's" parked car when it stopped suddenly decided he didn't want to witness the free entertainment and threw it in reverse. The guy really must have been shit his pants because he floored it, flying straight for me in reverse. I had to swerve off to the far right side of the road to avoid him.

I was a little freaked out myself, but the exhilaration and curiosity won out. I slowly pulled forward to watch the scene unfold. The three "students" who jumped out of their car to ambush the individual "student" were busy calling him a "bitch", "coward" and "faggot" as they crept towards him. He was bravely standing his ground on the edge of the street corner while throwing back his own insults. I couldn't believe he wasn't running; I certainly would have been if I were outnumbered by four big ass motherfuckers looking to kick my ass. Then I found out why he wasn't running, and so did they. He opened his coat to reveal something, I'm not sure what because I didn't see it, but it made his four adversaries run like hell back to their car, jump in with slammed doors, and squeal their tires as they got the hell out of there.

I always see these dudes walking down the back of my alley after school, before school, and during school. I've even ran into a few of them smoking bud by my car.

Wow, this place is really getting better everyday, really showing improvement. Shit, it's like Motorcycle Boy said in Rumble Fish: "California is like a wild girl on herion: you can show her the scars, but she still won't believe you when you tell her she's dying". I'd expand that to the rest of American and the world as well.

God damn it, I didn't think people still stole car stereos. I guess I must of gotten on a "students" bad side when I expected him to work hard and educate himself. I should have just left him alone to his own mutually assured self-destruction. It's just the nature of humanity, I guess. Okay, so things aren't that bad. In-fact, things are going pretty damn well. Life is interesting and things are progressing. However, I'm still hurting over the Memphis loss. And the fact that I dropped Bill Hall for Mark Buerhle in my Yahoo! fantasy baseball league. What the fuck was I thinking? The season hadn't even started yet, and I didn't even need starting pitching. Oh well, at least my ESPN team is looking good. On the other hand, I miraculously got the first pick in both my drafts and subsequently took AROD in both drafts. Lucky for me? No, unlucky for AROD and the Yankees. There's no way he or the Yankees can do well after I landed him in two drafts. AROD and the Yankees received my fantasy pick of death. Good thing I hate AROD and the Yankees. Fuck, I should have picked Hanley Ramirez. Then again, I like Hanley. He doesn't deserve the fate of my fantasy draft-day touch of death.

I went to the body worlds exhibit this weekend. It was quite the experience aside from the freaky cadevaers posed in artistic poses that were supposed to be more science than spectacle. I have to agree that the exhibit is more science than spectacle. The primary spectacle came from observing the people that show up to such public events.

I was surprised by the number of young children at the event. I think there should at least be a: "You have to be tall enough to see in the glass case without being held up by your parents rule". And if your 10-12 year old daughters or sons aren't mature enough to refrain from commenting publicly about about the male/female genitalia in a sexual manner then you probably shouldn't bring them along, or at the very least reprimand them when they say something inappropriate. It still blows me away that I kept hearing a girl that couldn't have been older than 12 repeatedly commenting to her younger sister/friend/relative about how the men's "cocks are rather small" and how she's "had much bigger" throughout the exhibit. Apparently, her parents/guardians didn't give a shit.

However, the most shocking thing of all at the exhibit was the couple passionately making out, feeling each other up, and whispering dirty sweet nothings in each others ears while intermittently glancing at this exhibit. There was also a huge crowd around them. They were shameless. So are we.

It's all about the money, man...

Hellz, yeah! Sorry, UCLA friends, but my boys from da dirty dirty are taking me to the bank. I had them picked to win it since the first week of the season.

I've been an avid college basketball fan since I was in elementary school and this is the best college basketball team I've ever had the pleasure of watching. At the very least they're the most fun to watch play (even more fun than my beloved fab-5).

Oh, and I'm officially shifting Rose from my #2 pick in the draft to #1. The guy just has mad basketball skillz-both mental and physical. He knows when to make the pass, when to take it strong, and when to pop one off. He's just a great baller in the mold of Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Jason Kidd and Baron Davis. The thing is he's better than all four of those guys when they were freshmen in college.

Well, I didn't make it by the school today. I didn't work today. I did do my taxes, which is torture in itself. Apparently, I've been pre-approved to buy a car I can't afford, with money I don't really have. Kind of like the government and the economic stimulus plan. The market is still hanging in there, but I still can't get the numbers. People's portfolios are doing fine. There's hope. I hope the numbers don't catch up with the hope.

And speaking of economic stimulus fuck you OCPD for giving me a speeding ticket when I was going with traffic flow, not to mention I was being passed on both sides. In addition, it was more dangerous to pull me over in that heavy traffic to begin with. I bet you pulled me over b/c I had Santa Monica plates. Well, there goes three-hundred dollars and my perfect driving record. Fucking bastards. You fucking suck.

I think I should go down to the street corner and find those students. Maybe they can hook me up with some shit that will help me "just not give a fuck"?
